Title: The Aural Sea
2026.10.09
One of seven artists participating in the Uzbekistan Pavilion, Aygul Sarsen focuses her work on depicting feminine deities. At times youthful and hopeful, at times older and frightened. Yet always tied to the land. The Aral Sea. A land with a devastating, ecological history. A sea lost to progress.
Fascinating to see how a mythology of place can develop and be the source of hope for the future. Too young to have even seen the Aral Sea’s waters, Sarsen’s work is inspired by inherited stories, local mythology, and her own sense of place and hope.
Expressive and colorful, quick and emotional, Sarsen’s work draws you in, leaving you asking questions and hopefully leading you to investigate and research her meaning. The personification of the sea as feminine deity allows her to portray the sea with dignity and a full range of ages and emotions.
