Encountered on an evening stroll along the water’s edge near the Biennale Gardens, to my surprise, this stunningly evocative piece innocently waits for its discovery. Zeus, the most powerful of all Greek gods, present at the dawn of Hellenic Civilization, long forgotten and long replaced by newer gods, is reinterpreted to symbolize the fall of Western Civilization, start to finish, as civilizations do.
Bronze, crushed under the weight of centuries of progress and development, cracks and topples over, powerless to stop, coming to rest only when cradled by firm ground, nature, rest. Deep in thought, Zeus considers the centuries, the decisions, the opportunities, and the passivity and neglect of turning a blind eye. It was inevitable. Supreme power also ends.
Centuries of weight on our consciousness. We receive it at birth. And most of us never shake it. Entire lives spent carrying this load. Society. Expectations. Education. Family. Institutions. All geared to the preservation of power through support of the machine.
Truly look at Zeus’ face. Break free before it is too late. Don’t be fooled by its artistic mastery. Tragedy disguised as beauty.
